I just received a memo from the president of the Iowa High School Athletic Association addressing this (see last page). If the player is trying to avoid the pitch, then it is just a dead ball and he get's first base.

http://www.iahsaa.org/officials/2011%20BS%20LETTER%202.pdfBillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00239207887913733749noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7095009425937622616.post-68765846202349745132011-06-16T10:19:07.073-05:002011-06-16T10:19:07.073-05:00Honestly, I think it matters how old the players a...Honestly, I think it matters how old the players are. I think for younger players, they don't know any better so that's how they would react to the pitch.

Assuming that these were older kids, I may have called that a swing. Imagine if the player was trying to avoid the pitch, but instead of moving the bat forward to block the ball from hitting him, he curls himself forward and brings the bat forward with him, trying to avoid a pitch coming towards his head. That would be a swing and called a strike. I don't agree with yawetag - I think you could make an argument that he swung.Billhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00239207887913733749noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7095009425937622616.post-39817340193376259582011-06-16T10:00:00.611-05:002011-06-16T10:00:00.611-05:00That is absolutely correct. I got blasted that if the bat crosses the plane, it's a swing, even if there is no intent on swinging.Mark Badennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7095009425937622616.post-41180379031864886492011-06-15T11:56:40.063-05:002011-06-15T11:56:40.063-05:00No swing. In this situation, the batter never attempted to hit the pitch.yawetaghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13577662156616896471noreply@blogger.com
